San Diego Roller Derby Fundraiser at Joe's Pizza!

Last Thursday evening, San Diego Roller Derby held a Meet and Greet at Joe’s Pizza on Clairmont Mesa Blvd, and it was a huge SUCCESS. It’s not in my character to be fashionably late; however, as I walked into the pizzeria after the beginning of the event, I was astonished at what I saw. There was not an empty seat in the house! I was greeted by my derby brothers and sisters: “Liz, you’re here!”

The glasses were clinking, the demand of pizza at the buffet could not be met, and the laughter and smiles were everywhere you turned. Derby is a very intimidating sport -- even though we knock each other about at practices and games, we are a tight knit family; a group of gals and guys who absolutely love our sport, and we were excited to be able to share that enthusiasm with all of you.

It was a great way to get our season rolling! Thank you to Joe’s Pizza for opening up your restaurant to us, and everyone who came out to show your support! And if you missed it, then make sure not to be left out of the upcoming events that we have planned for this season. I am excited and honored to be a part of it. Until the next time we meet again…

SDRD Junior Cadettes

You’ve seen the Starlettles sparkle and have been wowed by the Rockettes. But, if that was not enough to make you fall in love with San Diego Roller Derby, we are now introducing a Junior Roller Derby team! The SDRD Junior Cadettes has begun and there is no stopping these fireballs of energy. With their tutus and glitter, these kids might seem as sweet as can be, but don’t be fooled, they are tough!

Ranging in ages from 8 -17 years old, they are determined to skate fast and furious. If you know SDRD you might recognize some of the Cadettes’ names, like “Mini-Sweet Pain”and “Little More Pain”. But some other juniors have gone out on their own with names like “Glitter Bomb” and “Hot Wheelz”. No matter what their skate name, these kids are as cute as can be, and fun to watch. So if you or someone you know is a girl or boy from 8 to 17 years old who likes to rollerskate, is looking for some new friendships and good exercise, this is the team for you. The Cadettes train every Sunday at 12:30 at Skateworld at 6907 Linda Vista Rd, San Diego. Practice is $5.

Men's Roller Derby

Men's Derby is back, and SDRD and Skateworld have got it! The first men only practice, led by Coach Brett Stang, went very well. The skaters presently have a lot of skill and the team looks strong and fast. They are ready and willing to learn the intricacies of derby skating. We are still looking for more skaters, as we need a good fifteen men to fill out a roster. So if you are tough and good on your skates, stop on by! We will train you and you'll have a blast!

Men can come to any practice (Mondays 6-8, Thursdays 6-8, and Sundays 11-12:30) to build skating and derby skills, but you will definitely want to make the special Men-Only extension of practice on Thursdays 8-9.

Practices are at Skateworld (6907 Linda Vista Rd, San Diego 92111) and cost $10 each. You will need skates, helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist guards. All equipment is available to borrow or rent when you start out.

For more information, contact San Diego Roller Derby at (619) 630-9496.
