San Diego Roller Derby is proud to work with The Princess Project Sparkle Plan for the AfterShock's very first home bout at Skateworld we are excited to do something different for our community. Every year, The Princess Project seeks and receives thousands of beautiful new or nearly new dresses and accessories in EXCELLENT condition from individual donors and corporate partners.


Hundreds of volunteers accept and organize these dresses and accessories to run an exciting giveaway event in the early spring for individual high school girls. Each year, hundreds of girls attend the dress giveaway to find that new prom dress and those perfect accessories to make their high school prom a reality. And it’s all FREE!Since 2002, The Princess Project has served over 15,000 girls through the dedication of more than 700 volunteers and the generous start-up support of Coro Northern California.

Rehab United Bike MS Team

In support of our community San Diego Roller Derby's charity of the month is the MS Bike Bay to Bay (Rehab United Bike MS Team) on October 22nd during our game vs. the OC Roller Girls.

The Rehab United Bike MS Team began in 2005 with 6 riders - since then has grown to nearly 40 riders annually and raised over $100,000! Riding 100-150 miles is nowhere near as difficult as confronting a lifetime with multiple sclerosis. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society gives us all reason to hope, though; in addition to supporting novel research projects around the globe, they provide much needed education, programs, and services to everyone who is affected by MS - including the diagnosed, their friends and families, and the healthcare professionals who work with them.

Bike MS Bay to Bay tour supports the National MS Society's mission to create a world free of multiple sclerosis, the most common neurological disorder leading to disability in young adults. Every hour in the United States, someone is newly diagnosed with MS, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with more than twice as many women as men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 450,000 people in the U.S., and 2.5 million worldwide.

SDRD Starlettes vs VCDD Vendolls

This past September 24th, SDRD’s Starlettes met with the VCDD Vendolls, yet again. Both teams battled it out on the track recently (June, 2011) at the Vendolls home in Ventura, CA, ending in a win for the Starlettes.


The evening began with a 30 minute bout with players from our men’s team, the Aftershocks, our B team, the Rockettes, and also included returning veteran skater, Sweet Pain. Both teams played as Black vs White featuring up and coming blockers such as Skaterbuilt, Bones Thugs and Disharmony and Bronze Vixen, and up and coming jammers, Iliac Attack, Soulrider and Tomikaze.


After the Black vs White game ended, the main teams skated onto the track for what would mark the second consecutive win for the Starlettes vs the Vendolls. It was a close, hard-hitting, action packed bout including, Marcy Slayground, Berle Scout and MVP of the night, Buns of Fury doing their best at blocking, together with the rest of the Starlettes blockers. The Vendoll’s players included many hard hitting ladies, like Vendetta Vixen and MVP of the night, Az Sassin. They most definitely posed a threat for the Starlettes, by playing a smart and strong game and building walls that seemed to be made out of bricks, literally.
Both teams put the best of their abilities and skills to work and fought hard but in the end, it was the Starlettes who took the win, with of close score of 147 Starlettes to 130 VenDolls. MVP jammer of the night went to Starlettes, Wonder Whoop’em and Vendolls Chronic Speed for getting through the pack with ferocity!


Our next bout will be taking place October 22nd, 2011 at Skateworld, the last standing roller rink in San Diego County. SDRD will be hosting another double header! This time around it’ll be against OCRG; Starlettes vs Wheel Housewives of OC and Rockettes vs. Pulp Friction. It’ll be the last game of the season for the Starlettes so please buy your tickets in support your favorite roller girl! Starlettes vs Hard Corps

On June 18th, the Starlettes played one of the most anticipated games in the history of San Diego Roller Derby. Our guest this time around was the SDDD Hard Corps. It was a very exciting game, full of hip checks, jammers skating at the speed of light and most of all, lots of blocker on blocker action! The fans of roller derby in America ’s finest city came for a show and the teams sure did deliver.

The evening began with SDRD’s junior league, The Cadettes, who are coached by our very own Bully Julie and Coach B. Stang. All the Cadettes played skated to the very best of their abilities, but the most outstanding players this game were Booty Bumper and Rollin Angel. Their on skate skills bumped the evening to what would turn out to be a fast rolling night.
Shortly after the Cadettes thrilling game, the first whistle was blown by Rockettes’ Captain and sometimes Starlettes Ref, Nicci Two Skates. The Starlettes and Hard Corps began rolling on the track. The first line to go out was lead by Ortega Chile as pivot, Brigg Em’ Down, Marcy Slayground and I.B. Rascal. The second line was lead by pivot, Robyn Ur Pride, Sugar Britches, Bully Julie and Buns of Fury. With two solid lines covering the first half of this bout, jammer’s, Wicked Angel, Dee Troit and Icepax (captain) zipped around the track to score points leaving the Hard Corps behind by a 30 point difference.

By the second half, Ortega Chile decided her line needed something sweet, and she added some Rumble Pie to it. Sugar was the last thing from Rumble’s mind as she came to the floor dolling out thundering hits instead. Snow Bunny on Wheelz came in as a jammer, giving Wicked Angel a chance to go on Robyn Ur Pride’s line, and show off her blocking skills. Rumor has it that the word in the crowd was that “Wicked Angel was killing the opposing team” and indeed she was!! The Starlettes fought hard for every single point, as the Hard Corps were not easy to defeat. However, they skated strong and played as a true team. With the rowdy fans pumping up the energy in the rink San Diego Roller Derby took the win Starlettes 125- San Diego Derby Dolls Hard Corps 77.

Double Win

San Diego Roller Derby was hosted, this past weekend, by the Ventura County Derby Darlins for a night of double header action. The drive up and home made for great Starlette/Rockette road trip memories.

The first bout was played by the Battalion of Skates against our Rockettes. This was the debut bout of Wreckliz Cherry, Catty Mojo, and Bone Thugs 'n Disharmony. The Battalion of Skates made it tough for the Rockettes during the first half, forming seemingly unbreakable walls. During the second half, the Rockettes began blasting those walls wide open making paths for our jammers to slip through. Even though they were one player down (apparently Berry Nasty was too Nasty) the second half proved to be their opportunity to score some major points ending in a win, Rockettes 113, Battalion of Skates 88. Congrats to our Rockettes!

By the time 6:45pm rolled around, it was the Starlettes’ turn to battle it against the VCDD’s Vendolls and the Rockettes turn to get rowdy for their league as their energy was still high from their earlier win. The Starlettes had the privilege of borrowing a few Rockettes, Snow Bunny on Wheels, Berle Scout and Split Endz as they were missing a few of their players this time around. With the help of the strong Starlettes lines, Snow Bunny on Wheels, Wicked Angel and Icepax shone, darting through the pack and showing their stripes as jammers to be reckoned with.

The score stayed close with the Vendolls coming out in front at the end of the first half. During a rousing second half, with an energetic crowd feeding the energy on the floor, the Starlettes rallied, earning their victory 137 -113.  Way to go Starlettes!

SDRD’s Starlettes will be playing against SDDD’s Hard Corps. This is the first time these teams have met in their home city and will go down in history. The San Diego Audubon Society will be the charity for the next bout!

That's right! The San Diego Audubon Society will be the charitable group being promoted at this month's San Diego Roller Derby bout! SDRD helps out a local charitable cause at each of their home bouts - and this month it's the San Diego Audubon Society! You will not want to miss this event! Not only will you enjoy some great roller derby, but there will also be opportunity drawings where you have a chance to win some great prizes!


San Diego Audubon Society will also have a booth set up at the bout where you can get more information about how they are working to protect birds and other wildlife through education, while advocating for a cleaner, healthier environment. Pick up info on upcoming San Diego Audubon events and how you can get involved. All the action happens on Saturday, May21st. Tickets are $12 general admission and children 5 and under are FREE! Your ticket also gets you entry to the open skate session following the bout, so you can stay and skate afterward (skate rental is an extra $4). If that's not for you, then be sure to check out the after party where you can have a chance to hang out with all the derby gals at the High Dive.

Hip checks, rock blocks and a close score, oh my!

On Saturday April 16th, Skateworld opened its doors to its beloved San Diego Roller Derby fans for the 3rd game of the 2011 season. This time around, the SDRD Starlettes had their eyes on Sac City Roller Girls; both teams had played against each other 3 weeks earlier in the 2nd Annual Dustbowl Invitational: How the West Was Won hosted by Derby Revolution of Bakersfield. You must have read about our loss against Sac City at the tournament which landed us in 4th place. So, if you know the Starlettes, you probably know that they were more than ready for sweet revenge. Our Black and White team kicked off the night with a game lead by White Team Pivot, Nicci Two Skates and Black Team Pivot, Coach B. Stang. They played a tight 30 minute game that allowed our crowd to see just how much jammers Snow Bunny On Wheelz and Tutu Tuff have improved their skills, nothing stops these girls from getting through the pack! There were also some new faces to see, including Catty Mojo and NeuralizeHER. It seems like these teams just really like to be nice to each other. Black vs White have played each other three times this season. The first game was won by Black, second by White and last Saturday, Black took the win again.

The Starlettes and Sac City Roller Girls laced up their skates and were ready to hit the floor by 6:00 pm. The game started off with jams lead by Icepax for SDRD and Spankenstien from SCRG. Both teams strategized well and played a hard 60 minute game, keeping the score close the entire time. The win could have gone to any team, but SCRG jammer got herself a major penalty towards the end and was sent to the box; this gave MVP jammer of the night, Dee Troit a chance to score some major points. Although the game never ended as a result of it being called off by the head referee, Tomikaze, the score ended at 130-113 Starlettes. Congrats to MVP Blockers, Team Captain Lady Diesel and Robin Ur Pride and MVP jammers, Dee Troit and Wicked Angel. You ladies made us proud!

We are preparing and training hard to participate the Battle of the Coast 2011 hosted by the Ventura County Derby Darlins. This will be a full weekend of roller derby fun taking place the weekend of May 14, 2011. SDRD’s Rockettes will also be hosting their first game of the season at Skateworld on May 21, 2011. SDRD supports Hogar Infantil La Gloria

On April 16^th, San Diego Roller Derby is proud to team with St. Augustine High School for their Lenten Orphanage Drive to support Hogar Infantil La Gloria. This is the 3rd annual event for the local high school and the 2^nd year that San Diego Roller Derby has helped with this effort. We are excited to once again join forces to help St. Augustine High School reach their goal and take the burden of money off of the orphanage for entire month. Last year, San Diego Roller Derby raised $900 to support this effort. Hogar Infantil La Gloria is an orphanage in Tijuana, BC, houses 45 children from newborns to early teenagers. Just two years ago, Hogar Infantil La Gloria was on the verge of closing their doors altogether. We want to make sure that this year there is no fear of shutting down.

This history of the orphanage proves hope, dedication, and love are very much in their community. In the early 1970's a family, Lupita and Guillermo MacFarland, filed an official report with the Mexican Government about the poor care of the orphans and the conditions they resided in. After an investigation, the MacFarlands were granted administration over the orphanage. Today, Hogar Infantil La Gloria, with the efforts of the MacFarlands, Norma Bustamante, the Augustinians, and other dedicated volunteers, is a safe home for the abused, abandoned, and neglected children of Tijuana, BC.

After seeing the pictures of these children there is no question of the hope and love and inspiration in their eyes. The orphanage runs solely on donations and needs our help. The monthly costs consist of school, medical, food and staffing. Often times, the children receive three meals a day however, their three meals might be equivalent to one of ours. We are inviting you to make a difference in their lives. In addition to monetary donations we are taking donations of much needed supplies for the facility. When you come down to cheer on San Diego Roller Derby bring along with your good spirits and team pride a donation and do your small part to make a difference in the life of a child. No matter how small our individual donations are we can make big changes when we band together as a community, and what better things to gather for than children and Roller Derby! Here is a list of items that are needed at the orphanage. If you would like to help you can bring an item off this list to our game; we will have a box out front and will be giving the items to the orphanage the following week.

The Battle of March 12th, 2011

Before March 12th arrived, the SDRD Starlettes were probably feeling a little more pressure than usual, maybe it was some anxiety or just pure excitement! And that's because Rage City Roller Girls from Anchorage, Alaska were coming to play. Rage City Roller Girls has some exceptional players with amazing skills hidden by cute uniforms, and they were also seeking a sweet revenge.

Sugar Britches takes Lead Jammer status!

The Starlettes last battle against Rage City was on May of 2010 for the Battle of the Coast in Ventura, CA. This game was extremely close and after a nail biting 60 minutes, it was down to the last block, the last whip, the last jam, the last effort, resulting in Rage City’s loss, and the Starlettes winning the tournament!

Trifecta number 2 of the 2011 season for the Starlettes at Skateworld in Linda Vista started with The Black Team lead by Coach B. Stang against The White Team lead by Sweet Pain. The teams cruised onto the track and started off what would be one exhilarating night. After a very close 30 minute game and to everybody’s great surprise, the White Team did the things right, and won the mini bout with a close score of 48-43! Congratulation White Team!

At 6:00 PM, the music to the national anthem beautifully resonated the arcs of Skateworld, thanks to our very own Stella Hot Mess. Soon after, the moment that SDRD and Rage City Roller Girls had been expecting (as well as the huge crowd) for so long finally arrived , and the ladies in black, silver and pink together with the ladies in black and orange rolled into the track to initiate a historic bout that would end up resembling a fight scene from and old action movie with all the “POWS” “BOOMS!” and “WHAMS!” included.

SDRD had been preparing for hard hitting but they didn’t know that Alaska’s hip checks and rock blocks had tripled in power. MVP of the night Lethal Lavander and her reliable blockers put several of our Starlettes on the ground, and kept our jammers behind the pack; but as many of you already know, the Starlettes don’t give up easily and they LOVE a good fight. They’ve actually been known to perform in super natural ways when challenged to such an extreme!

As usual in a game of such intensity, in the last jam, the Starlettes MVP blocker (for the third time in a row) I.B. Rascal, and her partner in crimnging ande, Buns of Fury worked at keeping RCRG’s jammer behind the pack without scoring, and after a few laps she got sent to the penalty box, allowing a power jam for SDRD, starring MVP jammer of the night, Icepax who skated like a pro, twirled like ballerina and riled up the amazing crowd that attended this epic battle, ending in a tight score of 140 to 119! We would like to thank the ladies from Alaska for traveling to sunny San Diego and for playing one of the most challe exciting games in the history of San Diego Roller Derby! Each and every one of you carry some major skills and left us with a serious case of post bout blues and beautiful bruises. We can’t wait to play again!

We also couldn’t let a game go by without thanking our fans for attending our games, cheering us on, and participating in our charity. Thank you for helping us raise funds to Save our Skateworld and congratulations to those who won prizes!

A Tragic Loss in the SDRD Family

San Diego Roller Derby is a family affair. By this we mean that it is something the whole family can watch, participate in and enjoy. What is also meant is that we, as a team, are a family and when one of our own is hurting and in need we share in her pain and will be there to support her. On January 4th, one of ours lost one of hers. (Read Thomas Alan Arnold's obituary here.) Molly RinkMauled and her family is playing short a key teammate and, though there are no replacements, there are many supporting staff that can help in some small way.

Every bout we volunteer our time and collect money for a cause that is near and dear to the hearts of members of SDRD. This month we assisted a fellow skater during the memorial service for her husband and we will be having a raffle at our bout where in 50% of the proceeds will go to help her family. We ask for your assistance, for Molly Rink Mauled as her family begins to rebuild from the loss of a father, husband, coach, and friend.
