Rehab United Bike MS Team

Bike MS - Bike to Create a World Free of MS

In support of our community San Diego Roller Derby's charity of the month is the MS Bike Bay to Bay (Rehab United Bike MS Team) on October 22nd during our game vs. the OC Roller Girls.
The Rehab United Bike MS Team began in 2005 with 6 riders - since then has grown to nearly 40 riders annually and raised over $100,000! Riding 100-150 miles is nowhere near as difficult as confronting a lifetime with multiple sclerosis. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society gives us all reason to hope, though; in addition to supporting novel research projects around the globe, they provide much needed education, programs, and services to everyone who is affected by MS - including the diagnosed, their friends and families, and the healthcare professionals who work with them.
Bike MS Bay to Bay tour supports the National MS Society's mission to create a world free of multiple sclerosis, the most common neurological disorder leading to disability in young adults. Every hour in the United States, someone is newly diagnosed with MS, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with more than twice as many women as men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 450,000 people in the U.S., and 2.5 million worldwide.

SDRD Starlettes vs VCDD Vendolls

This past September 24th, SDRD’s Starlettes met with the VCDD Vendolls, yet again. Both teams battled it out on the track recently (June, 2011) at the Vendolls home in Ventura, CA, ending in a win for the Starlettes.

The evening began with a 30 minute bout with players from our men’s team, the Aftershocks, our B team, the Rockettes, and also included returning veteran skater, Sweet Pain. Both teams played as Black vs White featuring up and coming blockers such as Skaterbuilt, Bones Thugs and Disharmony and Bronze Vixen, and up and coming jammers, Iliac Attack, Soulrider and Tomikaze.

After the Black vs White game ended, the main teams skated onto the track for what would mark the second consecutive win for the Starlettes vs the Vendolls. It was a close, hard-hitting, action packed bout including, Marcy Slayground, Berle Scout and MVP of the night, Buns of Fury doing their best at blocking, together with the rest of the Starlettes blockers. The Vendoll’s players included many hard hitting ladies, like Vendetta Vixen and MVP of the night, Az Sassin. They most definitely posed a threat for the Starlettes, by playing a smart and strong game and building walls that seemed to be made out of bricks, literally.
Both teams put the best of their abilities and skills to work and fought hard but in the end, it was the Starlettes who took the win, with of close score of 147 Starlettes to 130 VenDolls. MVP jammer of the night went to Starlettes, Wonder Whoop’em and Vendolls Chronic Speed for getting through the pack with ferocity!

Our next bout will be taking place October 22nd, 2011 at Skateworld, the last standing roller rink in San Diego County. SDRD will be hosting another double header! This time around it’ll be against OCRG; Starlettes vs Wheel Housewives of OC and Rockettes vs. Pulp Friction. It’ll be the last game of the season for the Starlettes so please buy your tickets in support your favorite roller girl! This Month's Charity

This month, San Diego Roller Derby is honored to have The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society as our charity.  Donations and 50/50 raffle will support this nobel cause. The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society is a private non-profit charitable organization. It is sponsored by the Department of the Navy and operates nearly 250 offices ashore and afloat at Navy and Marine Corps bases throughout the world. The Society was incorporated in the District of Columbia and has its headquarters in Arlington, Virginia. It is managed by a Board of Directors whose members are active duty or retired members of the Naval Services, or spouses of active duty or retired members of the Naval Services. Their mission is to provide in partnership with the navy and marine corps, financial, educational, and other assistance to the members of the Naval Services of the United States, eligible family members, and other survivors when in need: and to receive and manage funds to administer these programs. I hope others will honor their military heroes by joining us in stepping up during these difficult economic times and aiding those who turn to this great organization when in need.

Starlettes vs Hard Corps

On June 18th, the Starlettes played one of the most anticipated games in the history of San Diego Roller Derby. Our guest this time around was the SDDD Hard Corps. It was a very exciting game, full of hip checks, jammers skating at the speed of light and most of all, lots of blocker on blocker action! The fans of roller derby in America ’s finest city came for a show and the teams sure did deliver.

The evening began with SDRD’s junior league, The Cadettes, who are coached by our very own Bully Julie and Coach B. Stang. All the Cadettes played skated to the very best of their abilities, but the most outstanding players this game were Booty Bumper and Rollin Angel. Their on skate skills bumped the evening to what would turn out to be a fast rolling night.
Shortly after the Cadettes thrilling game, the first whistle was blown by Rockettes’ Captain and sometimes Starlettes Ref, Nicci Two Skates. The Starlettes and Hard Corps began rolling on the track. The first line to go out was lead by Ortega Chile as pivot, Brigg Em’ Down, Marcy Slayground and I.B. Rascal. The second line was lead by pivot, Robyn Ur Pride, Sugar Britches, Bully Julie and Buns of Fury. With two solid lines covering the first half of this bout, jammer’s, Wicked Angel, Dee Troit and Icepax (captain) zipped around the track to score points leaving the Hard Corps behind by a 30 point difference.

By the second half, Ortega Chile decided her line needed something sweet, and she added some Rumble Pie to it. Sugar was the last thing from Rumble’s mind as she came to the floor dolling out thundering hits instead. Snow Bunny on Wheelz came in as a jammer, giving Wicked Angel a chance to go on Robyn Ur Pride’s line, and show off her blocking skills. Rumor has it that the word in the crowd was that “Wicked Angel was killing the opposing team” and indeed she was!! The Starlettes fought hard for every single point, as the Hard Corps were not easy to defeat. However, they skated strong and played as a true team. With the rowdy fans pumping up the energy in the rink San Diego Roller Derby took the win Starlettes 125- San Diego Derby Dolls Hard Corps 77.

SDRD would like to thank the SDDD Hard Corps for coming out to Skateworld. It was an absolute pleasure playing with you ladies! A big thank you to all of our fans for your continued support, we love you!

Rockettes vs IEDD

San Diego Roller Derby's May game was quite a special bout for the league. Not only was it the Rockettes first game of the season, but our very own junior Cadettes got to open the evening with their first 20 minute bout! The crowd seemed so pleased as they cheered on our juniors while they played a very entertaining game!

As the first game whistle blew, the Rockettes attempted to stay strong with a wall upfront. IEDD did a good job of breaking up walls and keeping the pack fast with strong hits but none the less, this made the Rockettes work harder as a team and stick together using solid walls and hits which did not allow the Derby Divas to pass the Rockettes 35 point lead. Right before the first half of the game came to an end, the Rockettes Captian Nicci Two Skates is down with an ankle injury, which left her out for the rest of the game. The score was 90 -45.

When half time approached we were very proud to have our coach B. Stang and jam skate partner William Jackson back on the track entertaining the crowd with their infamous jumps, flips, and jam skate moves- their show always pleases our fans!

As the second half of the game started, the Rockettes seemed to be a little shaken having lost their Captian in the first half. Inland Empire used this to their advantage and with 9 minutes left in the game, they had come back to only be down by one point, the score was 110-109! This left the Rockettes with no other choice but to step up their game, ending in a 40 point victory! The final score was 177-137 .

We could not have asked for a better game with such great sportsWOmanship. The Inland Empire Derby Divas had a blast hanging with us at the after party, laughing and recapping the game. IEDD chose Berry Nasty as MVP blocker of the night and TUTU TUFF as MVP jammer. Well deserved ladies!!

We hope that you will come support SDRD in our upcoming fundraising event to raise money for our trip to Idaho, as we are participating in a tournament hosted by Treasure Valley Derby Girls. Our fundraiser will be held at the Malt Shop located on Midway Drive in the Sports Arena area on June 17th.

Don't miss our next bout June 18th against the SAN DIEGO DERBY DOLLS HARDCORPS! This is going to be the best game of the season; it will definitely be an on the edge of your chair, nail biting, derby mania!!!. You don't want to miss out. You can purchase your tickets online or through your favorite derby girl.

Renegade Roller Derby bout...

Last night I went down to National City with several compadres from SDRD to watch a "Renegade Roller Derby" bout. The promise of "no holds barred" bout was something to think about.

It certainly was something else.  As the program says, there are no penalties.  There are rules of some kind,  but what's the point?  Anyway,  there are three 15 minute periods, no timeout (except for injuries) and no refs.  The jams last one minute and can't be called off.  The jammer makes it through the pack and then she scores three points for every time she laps the other teams skaters. The place had a nice track for the bout and they certainly had a fair share of vocal fans.

The skaters can do anything they want, cut the track, use elbows or even take downs.  This results in some fighting here and there.  Then there are three or four guys in the middle who come over to separate them.  The jammers and the blockers all started at the same whistle, and the track was about a third smaller than the WFTDA one.

It really wasn't my kind of show, overall.  I like spectacles, but here it didn't quite feel as if there was a flow.  The skaters did their best to entertain the crowd, for sure, it was just lacking either the all out sports entertainment aspect or a more athletic contest.  These things can probably coexist within the same sport, but it's not been my experience to see it.

It was still  a fun evening overall and I really enjoyed the company.

The Battle of March 12th, 2011

Before March 12th arrived, the SDRD Starlettes were probably feeling a little more pressure than usual, maybe it was some anxiety or just pure excitement! And that's because Rage City Roller Girls from Anchorage, Alaska were coming to play. Rage City Roller Girls has some exceptional players with amazing skills hidden by cute uniforms, and they were also seeking a sweet revenge.
Sugar Britches takes Lead Jammer status!
The Starlettes last battle against Rage City was on May of 2010 for the Battle of the Coast in Ventura, CA. This game was extremely close and after a nail biting 60 minutes, it was down to the last block, the last whip, the last jam, the last effort, resulting in Rage City’s loss, and the Starlettes winning the tournament!
Trifecta number 2 of the 2011 season for the Starlettes at Skateworld in Linda Vista started with The Black Team lead by Coach B. Stang against The White Team lead by Sweet Pain. The teams cruised onto the track and started off what would be one exhilarating night. After a very close 30 minute game and to everybody’s great surprise, the White Team did the things right, and won the mini bout with a close score of 48-43! Congratulation White Team!
At 6:00 PM, the music to the national anthem beautifully resonated the arcs of Skateworld, thanks to our very own Stella Hot Mess. Soon after, the moment that SDRD and Rage City Roller Girls had been expecting (as well as the huge crowd) for so long finally arrived , and the ladies in black, silver and pink together with the ladies in black and orange rolled into the track to initiate a historic bout that would end up resembling a fight scene from and old action movie with all the “POWS” “BOOMS!” and “WHAMS!” included.
SDRD had been preparing for hard hitting but they didn’t know that Alaska’s hip checks and rock blocks had tripled in power. MVP of the night Lethal Lavander and her reliable blockers put several of our Starlettes on the ground, and kept our jammers behind the pack; but as many of you already know, the Starlettes don’t give up easily and they LOVE a good fight. They’ve actually been known to perform in super natural ways when challenged to such an extreme!
As usual in a game of such intensity, in the last jam, the Starlettes MVP blocker (for the third time in a row) I.B. Rascal, and her partner in crimnging ande, Buns of Fury worked at keeping RCRG’s jammer behind the pack without scoring, and after a few laps she got sent to the penalty box, allowing a power jam for SDRD, starring MVP jammer of the night, Icepax who skated like a pro, twirled like ballerina and riled up the amazing crowd that attended this epic battle, ending in a tight score of 140 to 119! We would like to thank the ladies from Alaska for traveling to sunny San Diego and for playing one of the most challe exciting games in the history of San Diego Roller Derby! Each and every one of you carry some major skills and left us with a serious case of post bout blues and beautiful bruises. We can’t wait to play again!
IB Rascal waves to her friendly opponents
We also couldn’t let a game go by without thanking our fans for attending our games, cheering us on, and participating in our charity. Thank you for helping us raise funds to Save our Skateworld and congratulations to those who won prizes!
SDRD has lots of derby fun coming up. If you want a weekend full of roller derby action, follow us on the road up to Bakersfield on March 26th and 27th. We will be participating in the 2nd Annual Dustbowl Invitational hosted by Derby Revolution of Bakersfield! Do you want more derby but can’t travel? Come watch your Starlettes play against SAC City Roller Girls on April 16th, 2011!

San Diego Roller Derby vs. OC Rollergirls - Our First Bout of Our 2010 Season!

The lights shined, the girls looked amazing in their new skirts, designed by team member IcePax,undeniable buzz of excitement in the air of Skateworld. San Diego Roller Derby (SDRD) was about to skate in our very first home bout ever! With none of the team members having any experience in running a bout, the preceding months were filled with hard work, research, and late nights to assure that bout production ran smoothly. The hard work was about to show itself off in front of a packed house of almost 700 spectators - which we were determined to turn into SDRD fans. The SDRD Starlettes welcomed the Orange County Rollergirls (OCRG) to our “house” for our debut home game and were filled with a sense of pride and a healthy dose of nerves.

Our training since our last bout against the Derby of Bakersfield in November has been nothing less than intense. Our coach B-Stang has been amazing, we would be nowhere with out him. Our practices focused on endurance and fundamental skating skills. "A strong skater makes a good derby player", we are told time and time again. Practicing strategies, knowing the game, and learning the rules thoroughly were part of our plan to play a clean game. Knowing that OCRG was going to be our toughest challenge to date, staying focused in our practice was our goal. We knew our task ahead was going to be no walk in the park, these were experienced, well trained skaters were were preparing ourselves to go up against.

The adrenaline was flowing through our veins, and the tension was high, as SDRD knew that we had a long battle ahead of us on Saturday evening of January 23rd of 2010. As the jammers flew off of the line OCRG proved to be a match for our defense and held our jammers in the pack and kept them from scoring for the first couple of jams. Power blockers Lady Diesel and Rumble Pie soon came out swinging and paved the road for the Starlette jammers to put some hard earned points on the board. “Diesel is like a force to be reckoned with”, an OCRG girl was overheard saying later that night at the after party.

SDRD jammers, Wonder Whoop’em and Dorothy Dangerous as a testament to their strong fundamental trainers,
were quick on their feet, avoiding numerous blocks from OCRG’s own heavy hitters and maneuvering through the tough pack. Robyn Urpride and Wicked Angel, both played their first games as Starlettes and made their new team members proud. Flown in from Ohio was SDRD’s very own Holley Car Brader who played her usual heavy hitter and jammer without a hitch. As this was her last game with SDRD Holley will be sorely missed by her teammates but not so much by the opposing teams. Also on the line-up was Icepax with her fancy-footed jamming skills and Juno Escareme as a great blocker/ jammer combo. Blockers like St. Val Massacre show that we have some heavy hitters of our own and are not going down with out a fight. OCRG lived up to the high expectations that we had for their team. They kept the pack fast and our endurance that we have been working so hard on was put to the test. We were thankful for the hours we spent sweating in the rink with high endurance in mind. OCRG held the lead with SDRD fighting hard to close the gap within 9 points more than once. There was no lack of blood, sweat and heart out on the track. We gave it our all, being motivated by the cheers of our new fans was a new and fantastic experience.

When all was said and done, SDRD didn’t win our first home bout. With a final
score of 56–103, we gave it our all but in the end OCRG came out on top. Our score may have been small but our hearts are big. We fought by tooth and nail, gave it our all, and learned a lot. This experience is only going to make us work harder and become stronger together. It has strengthened our determination and made us hungrier for a victory. We will continue to give our all every practice and train hard for every bout. With Coaches like B-Stang and Gary Stang on our side - and legends like John Hall in our corner - we can only get better with each passing practice.

In the end we were happy about the $350 that we earned for the International Rescue Committee, the charitable organization that we hosted at our first home bout. That combined with the amount of love and support that we recieved from our families, friends, and fans made us feel like winners even as OCRG was doing their victory lap. Thank you to all who came, cheered, screamed, and made it all worth it. This season is just getting started - you haven't seen anything yet! Get your signs ready, rest your voices, and get set to come see us take on the Inland Empire Derby Diva on our home turf, Skateworld, San Diego on Febuary 27th 2010. Now you can get your tickets online by using the "But Tickets" link on the right. No more waiting in line on bout day! SDRD members can also sell you some tickets, or pick them up at Skateworld during normal business hours. See you at Skateworld!
